Understanding 3D Printing Materials

Choosing the right material is just as important as choosing the right printer. Each 3D printing filament and resin has unique properties — including print temperature, strength, flexibility, and difficulty level — that make it suitable for specific applications.

PLA is the most popular material for beginners: it's easy to print, biodegradable, and produces minimal odor. PETG offers better strength and is food-safe, making it ideal for functional parts. For flexible projects like phone cases or gaskets, TPU is the go-to choice. More advanced users can explore ABS (requires enclosure), Nylon (extremely durable), and Carbon Fiber composites (lightweight and stiff).

If you're using a resin printer, you'll work with liquid photopolymer resins cured by UV light. Resin produces incredibly fine detail — perfect for tabletop miniatures, jewelry, and dental models — but requires ventilation and post-processing with isopropyl alcohol.
